Eyelid Surgery Bellevue

As we age, our faces begin to lose their natural elasticity, resulting in sagging, drooping, and a loss of volume in the skin. The eye area is no different. Sagging around the eyelid area can result in unattractive undereye bags or droopy lids, causing one to look tired and haggard all the time. To reverse these signs of aging and bring back a youthful appearance, many choose to undergo eyelid surgery here at Pacific Sound Plastic Surgery in Bellevue. Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Kris Day, has performed countless eyelid surgeries, helping patients appear well-rested and years younger.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

A blepharoplasty, otherwise known as an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure in which excess skin and fat deposits are removed from the upper or lower eye areas. This procedure also involves the tightening and re-positioning of the underlying muscle tissue of the eyelids. Many people undergo blepharoplasty surgery to eliminate excess skin or fatty deposits hanging above their eyes as well as under eye bags.

Good Candidates for Blepharoplasty

Candidates for eyelid surgery include anyone that is unhappy with the skin around their eye area. This typically includes people who have sagging or drooping skin, severe under-eye bags, or puffy fat deposits around the eyes. This surgery is also beneficial for anyone seeking to correct excess skin or fine lines and appear younger. Additionally, eyelid surgery can help to resolve vision impairment in patients diagnosed with a medical condition called ptosis.

However, not everyone can undergo eyelid surgery. You must be in good health and have realistic expectations of the procedure’s results. You also need to be free of any eye infections or diseases before you can undergo the procedure.

Benefits of an Eyelid Lift

There are countless benefits to undergoing an eyelid lift surgery with our Bellevue plastic surgeon, Dr. Kris Day. The first is that ‌eyelid lift surgery can correct several aesthetic concerns one has regarding their eye area. This includes sagging or loose skin around the eyes, under-eye bags, excess fat deposits, unwanted eyelid folds, puffiness, and fine lines. Not only can an eyelid lift eliminate these cosmetic concerns, but it can help you obtain a more refreshed, youthful, and attractive appearance. In some cases, an eyelid lift even helps to improve one’s vision and create rounder-looking eyes.

Your Eyelid Lift Consultation

During your eyelid lift consultation with Bellevue plastic surgeon Dr. Kris Day, you’ll discuss your aesthetic concerns regarding your eye area, as well as any visual impairment you may be experiencing. You will also talk about what you hope to achieve through this procedure and what your ideal results are. Dr. Day will then analyze your eyelid area, eye shape, face contour, and skin tissue to create a surgical plan that will provide you with those desired results. He’ll also walk you through before and after photos, explaining what happens during the eyelid lift surgery in great detail.

Preparing for Eyelid Surgery

When preparing for your eyelid surgery at Pacific Sound Plastic Surgery, we advise that you stop any tobacco use at least six weeks before, as it can increase the risk of complications. Dr. Day and his team will also review any medications, supplements, and vitamins you are currently taking and inform you of which ones to stop prior to the surgery. You should also organize transportation for after your eyelid surgery, as you won’t be able to drive. Some patients qualify for insurance coverage for an upper eyelid lift if tissue is obstructing their vision, and this assessment can be made at your consultation with possible follow up testing, as needed.

What to Expect During Eyelid Surgery

When it comes time for your eyelid surgery in Bellevue, Dr. Kris Day will ensure you are completely comfortable on the day of the procedure. He’ll answer any questions you may have and provide you with a comprehensive list of aftercare instructions. Then, one of our anesthesiologists will administer a general anesthetic, putting you into a deep sleep. Soon after, Dr. Day will begin your eyelid surgery.

Here at Pacific Sound Plastic Surgery in Bellevue, we offer two different types of eyelid surgery. Dr. Day will perform either an upper eyelid lift or a lower eyelid lift. In some cases, he performs an upper and lower eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, at the same time. Surgery is also performed for Asian patients that want to transform their eyelid into a more almond-shape, the so-called “Asian blepharoplasty” or “double-lid surgery.”

An upper eyelid lift describes when an incision is made on the upper eyelid, and the excess skin and fat are removed. The muscles around the eye are then tightened, and the remaining skin tissue is lifted. In a lower eyelid lift, Dr. Day will make a small incision within the eyelid and under the lower lash line and remove fatty deposits and any excess skin tissue.

Patients are typically amazed at how little scarring is experienced long-term after eyelid surgery. Depending on the severity of your eye bags and skin concerns, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Day is able to perform an eyelid lift with no external incision. Additionally, many choose to combine an eyelid lift surgery with other non-invasive procedures, such as lasers and micro-needling, to maximize results.

Recovering From Eyelid Surgery

Since eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, you’ll be able to return home immediately after. Patients typically experience swelling, bruising, and some mild discomfort immediately following the procedure up until a few days. Some also experience blurred vision, dry eyes, and a slight sensitivity to bright light. Keep in mind that these side effects are completely normal for this type of procedure and should disappear after a few days.

Dr. Day and his team will direct you to use a cold compress, pain medication, and prescription eyedrops to help you manage discomfort and minimize swelling in the days following your surgery. They will also provide a prescription ointment to apply to your surgical incisions. It is recommended that you take 3-5 days off work and avoid heavy lifting and exercise for up to two weeks following the surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions About Eyelid Surgery

Patients interested in a blepharoplasty can expect to appear younger, look more refreshed and awake, and sometimes experience improved vision.

The cost of blepharoplasty varies from patient to patient and depends on the specifics of the surgical procedure. Your Bellevue plastic surgeon, Dr. Kris Day, is happy to discuss everything you need to know about costs during your surgical consultation.

In some cases where one’s vision is significantly impaired by the skin around their eyes - a condition known as ptosis, you may be able to have your eyelid surgery covered by insurance. If an optometrist performs a “visual field test” that shows you have lost vision due to excess skin, then your procedure might also be covered by your insurance. Unlike many other plastic surgery centers in Bellevue, we take insurance and are happy to discuss the details of this with you during your consultation.

Similar to many other surgical procedures, eyelid lift surgery does come with some risks important for you to be fully aware of. These include facial injury, swelling, bruising, pain, bleeding, infections, inflammation of the eye, facial numbness, and asymmetry. Fortunately, eyelid lift surgery is a fairly common procedure in that Dr. Kris Day has extensive experience. He will let you know all the risks and side effects associated with the procedure prior to your surgery.

No cosmetic surgery can stop aging forever. However, an eyelid lift is a long-lasting procedure that, like many aesthetic procedures, aims to “turn back the clock” 10-15 years. So, while aging continues after a rejuvenation procedure like an upper or lower eyelid lift, you should have a more youthful appearance for a lifetime.

Yes, in order to achieve maximum results, Dr. Kris Day recommends combining your eyelid lift with other minimally invasive procedures. Treatments such as periorbital fractional CO2 laser and microneedling can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eye area, as well as tighten the skin. Other patients use microneedling and PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, to achieve optimal results.
