What is Gender Affirming
Top Surgery?

Bring any relevant medical records, a list of questions for dr. Day, and a list of current medications and supplements.

Good Candidates for Gender Affirming Top Surgery

If you don’t feel comfortable with your current gender, gender affirming top surgery can be a good option. It’s also worth exploring if you’ve been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, which means there’s a mismatch between your biological sex and gender identity. We also recommend this procedure if you simply have a strong desire to be a different gender or would like the sexual characteristics of a different gender.

Benefits of Gender Affirming Top Surgery

There are several benefits of gender affirming top surgery. First and foremost, this procedure can improve your confidence, self-esteem, and overall well-being. If you believe that your gender identity doesn’t align with your physical characteristics, gender affirming top surgery may solve that problem. This procedure may also help with various mental health issues, such as depression and gender dysphoria. It may be just what you need to live life to the fullest.

What to Expect During
Gender Affirming Top Surgery

Here at Pacific Sound Plastic Surgery in Bellevue, we offer two different types of gender affirming top surgery. Female-to-male (FTM) top surgery is designed to create a masculine-looking chest in transgender men. Typically, Dr. Day will remove excess skin and fat and reposition the nipples to create a flatter chest. In male-to-female (MTF) top surgery, he may use silicone or saline implants to leave you with natural looking feminine curves.

Since there are many options for gender affirming top surgery, you can expect your unique procedure to be based on your goals and Dr. Days’ professional recommendations. No matter what it entails, we’ll collaborate with your other providers, such as your primary care physician and endocrinologist, to ensure you receive the best care possible.

Generally speaking, this top surgery is typically a 3-4 hour outpatient procedure that takes place at our accredited plastic surgery center in Bellevue. Dr. Day will ensure that you are completely comfortable and that any questions you have are answered on the day of your top surgery.

Preparing For
Gender Affirming Top Surgery

Prior to your top surgery, you’ll undergo consultation with Dr. Day, where you will discuss your medical history, previous surgeries, gender identity, and desired physical appearance. You will also review various before and after photos, so he can understand exactly what you are looking for in regard to size and shape. Additionally, he will thoroughly examine your breast area and torso to determine the specifics of your implant size and the best positioning for your new top.

At Pacific Sound Plastic Surgery, we follow World Professional Association for Transgender Health standards of care, which include the collection of a letter from a licensed mental health professional. This letter confirms that another clinician has diagnosed gender dysphoria and the patient’s desire to undertake an irreversible procedure.

Prior to gender affirming top surgery, we may ask you to stop taking anti-inflammatory medications, aspirin, and other medications as they can impair healing. Also, if you smoke, you should quit at least six weeks before the surgery. In addition, you’ll need to arrange for a family member or close friend to drive to and from the procedure and help you out for at least a few days afterward.

Recovering From Gender Affirming Top Surgery

The recovery process for gender affirming surgery will depend on the procedure or procedures performed. Rest assured, Dr. Day and his team will provide you with detailed instructions before and after your surgery. You may experience some discomfort, swelling, bruising, and soreness in the days following both the Female-to-male (FTM) and male-to-female (MTF) procedures. You should expect to take it easy for at least a few days and wear a compression bandage around your top area. Most patients can return to day-to-day activities after 5-10 days and strenuous activity after about a month. You can expect to see the final results of your surgery after the swelling has subsided, which is typically between two to three months.
