While it’s rarely discussed, gynecomastia or male breast enlargement is quite common. In fact, it’s a condition that affects between 50% and 60% of men in the U.S. Typically, gynecomastia is the result of excessive weight gain, genetics, steroids, and certain medications. The good news is it can be effectively resolved through surgery here at Pacific Sound Plastic Surgery in Bellevue. Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Kris Day, aims to provide the utmost care and support to men dealing with gynecomastia.
Gynecomastia is the technical term for the overdevelopment or enlargement of breast tissue in men or boys. It’s usually seen as a growth or lump underneath the nipple area and may occur in one or both breasts. Men can experience this condition at birth, during puberty, or in adulthood. Most healthcare providers will diagnose it with a physical exam and blood tests. It’s important to note that gynecomastia is different from fat that develops due to excessive weight gain. It is classified as the breast growth in the glandular tissue, which is located between a man’s chest and muscles.
You might be a good candidate for male breast reduction surgery if you:
Through gynecomastia surgery, men can enjoy a reduction in breast tissue. They may also reshape or enhance their chest contours and resolve puffy or sagging nipples. In addition, gynecomastia may balance asymmetrical breasts and improve the overall proportions of a man’s body. Men who undergo gynecomastia surgery are likely to feel more confident and comfortable in both their personal and professional lives.
There are several ways you can prepare for gynecomastia surgery at Pacific Sound Plastic Surgery in Bellevue. If you smoke, you’ll need to quit, as smoking can get in the way of the healing process. You should also avoid anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin and herbal supplements, as they can lead to complications, like bleeding. In addition, it’s important to arrange a ride home after the surgery.
Gynecomastia surgery is an outpatient procedure that will be customized to meet your needs. Usually, however, it combines the surgical excision of breast tissue and liposuction. Your Bellevue board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Day, will make a very small incision around the areola or the small ring of pigmented skin around the nipple area. Then, he’ll remove any excess fat and dense breast tissue to allow for a smooth contour. While you may notice results right away, they usually gradually occur over a three-month period. It typically takes between six to 12 months for your skin to tighten and develop a new shape in the chest.
After the gynecomastia surgery in Bellevue, your chest will be bandaged. Dr. Day will encourage you to wear a compression garment at all times. For at least three days, you should take it easy and move your upper body as little as possible. Depending on your position and healing progress, you may be able to resume work in seven to 10 days. Rest assured, Dr. Day will carefully go over any prescribed medications and specific recovery instructions with you prior to the procedure.

As long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle and a stable weight, you can enjoy the results of gynecomastia surgery for years. Keep in mind, however, that this procedure will not stop natural signs of aging, such as loose skin.
Good candidates for gynecomastia surgery are men with excess breast tissue, asymmetrical breast tissue, puffy or sagging nipples, and who are in good overall health.
Gynecomastia surgery may be covered by insurance if it is deemed medically necessary by Dr. Day and your insurance provider.
There will be small incision scars after the surgery. Dr. Day does his best to hide incision scarring in the natural contours of the chest to make sure they are not very noticeable.
Many men see an almost immediate improvement in their chest contour. Complete results, however, often take up to 12 months. Swelling and some bruising are normal after surgery, and the healing time will depend on the individual.
As with any type of surgery, there are potential risks associated with gynecomastia or male breast reduction surgery. These can include bleeding, swelling, bruising, infection, scarring, numbness, and changes in breast sensation.
