Chin Surgery (Genioplasty) Bellevue

If you’re self-conscious about the size, appearance, or prominence of your chin, a chin surgery may be worthwhile. During this procedure, Dr. Kris Day alters the shape and/or size of your chin through implants or surgical intervention, so that it complements your existing facial profile and features. Keep reading to learn more about what you can expect from chin surgery in Bellevue at Pacific Sound Plastic Surgery.

What is Chin Surgery?

There are two different forms of chin surgery: augmentation (implants) and genioplasty. Chin augmentation is when silicone or ‘PEEK’ implants are placed under the soft tissues to make the chin area more prominent. A genioplasty is performed to reshape the look of the chin by moving the bone forward, backward, or narrowing it.

What to Expect During Your Chin Surgery Procedure

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kris Day has two approaches to chin surgery: chin implants and genioplasty. If chin implants are the best option for your particular goals, he will help you choose the ideal implant for your face. Then, he’ll make an incision underneath your chin or inside your mouth, creating a pocket for the implant. Once he inserts the implant, he will make sure it gives your face the proper balance. Chin implants are designed for patients with weak or recessed chins.

If you opt for a genioplasty, Dr. Kris Day will make an incision inside your mouth, by your lower lip. Then, he’ll make a cut in your chin bone so that he can reposition it in a way that increases or decreases its prominence. Lastly, he’ll place a titanium plate to lock the chin in its new position and improve your facial proportion.

Recovering From Chin Surgery

Since a genioplasty involves cutting into the underlying bone and repositioning the skin tissue, the healing process is longer than it is with chin implants. No matter which approach you choose, you will likely experience a bit of swelling and pain, which will gradually subside on its own. Dr. Kris Day will prescribe pain medication to keep you as comfortable as possible and recommend a soft food diet until the healing process is complete. Most patients return to work and their daily routine after a few days.
