At Pacific Sound Plastic Surgery in Bellevue, Dr. Kristopher Day approaches every reconstruction as a deeply personal journey — one that begins with careful listening, honest planning, and a commitment to results that feel like you. Whether you’re choosing immediate reconstruction at the time of your mastectomy or returning for delayed reconstruction months or years later, you have options. And you deserve a surgeon with the credentials and experience to help you choose wisely. Dr. Day is double board-certified (ABPS + ABS) and Ivy League trained — bringing the highest level of surgical precision to one of the most meaningful procedures in plastic surgery.

What Is Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure — or series of procedures — that rebuilds the breast mound following a mastectomy (full breast removal) or lumpectomy (partial removal). The goal is to restore breast shape, symmetry, and proportion so that clothing fits naturally and you no longer have to carry the physical reminder of cancer treatment.

Reconstruction can be performed immediately following mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or months to years later (delayed reconstruction). Both approaches are covered by insurance under the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 (WHCRA), which requires most health insurance plans to cover reconstruction of the affected breast, symmetry procedures on the opposite breast, and prostheses for external use.

The Two Primary Approaches

Implant-Based Reconstruction: Using silicone or saline implants, often in a staged process with tissue expanders placed at the time of mastectomy. Expanders gradually stretch the skin over several months before being replaced with permanent implants. This is the most common approach for patients who prefer a shorter recovery and less scarring.

Autologous (Flap) Reconstruction: Using your own tissue — typically from the abdomen (TRAM or DIEP flap) or back (latissimus dorsi flap) — to create a natural-feeling breast. This method produces more natural long-term results for some patients, particularly those who have had radiation therapy or prefer to avoid implants.

Timing of Reconstruction

Immediate reconstruction is performed at the same time as mastectomy — one surgery, one recovery. Delayed reconstruction is chosen when patients need radiation therapy (which can affect implant outcomes), when additional cancer treatment is needed first, or simply when a patient needs time before making reconstruction decisions. There is no wrong answer. Dr. Day works with your oncology team to determine the safest, most effective timeline for your situation.

Benefits Of a Breast Reconstruction

Benefits List

Breast reconstruction is more than a cosmetic decision — it’s a physical and emotional milestone in cancer recovery. Research consistently shows that reconstruction improves quality of life, body image, and psychological wellbeing for breast cancer survivors. Here’s what patients consistently report after reconstruction with Dr. Day:

Benefits (6 items — present as benefit blocks or list)

  • Reclaim your body. Reconstruction restores breast shape and symmetry, so your body looks and feels like your own again — not a reminder of treatment.
  • Put cancer behind you — physically. Many patients find that completing reconstruction marks a meaningful psychological turning point in their recovery journey.
  • Improve self-confidence and comfort. Clothing, swimwear, and undergarments fit naturally again. You stop having to think about prostheses, padding, or special bras.
  • Eliminate the need for external prostheses. A permanent, surgically created breast means no daily prosthesis maintenance, no shifting, and no discomfort from external devices.
  • Symmetry on both sides is part of the plan. Reconstruction includes adjustments to the opposite breast — lift, reduction, or augmentation — so both sides match in shape and proportion.
  • Nipple and areola reconstruction complete the result. A final stage — nipple reconstruction and/or tattooing — creates a natural-appearing nipple complex. Dr. Day coordinates this stage as part of your overall reconstruction plan.

"Dr. Day is a true artist with exceptional care! I recently had breast revision surgery with Dr. Day and I could not be happier with the experience. From my initial consultation, I was immediately put at ease. Dr. Day listened attentively to my goals and took the time to explain the procedure and set realistic, yet exciting, expectations. I felt zero pressure and trusted his expertise completely. The day of the surgery, the entire team at Pacific Sound Plastic Surgery was professional, warm, and highly organized. My post-operative care was exceptional; they checked in frequently and provided clear, easy-to-follow instructions that made my recovery smooth and comfortable."

Your Breast Reconstruction Journey

Tissue Expander Placement

At the time of your mastectomy (or as a separate procedure for delayed reconstruction), a tissue expander is placed beneath the chest muscle. This temporary implant is gradually filled with saline over several weeks to stretch the skin and muscle to accommodate the final implant. Appointments for filling typically occur every 1–2 weeks in the office.

Exchange to Permanent Implant

Once expansion is complete and radiation therapy (if applicable) is finished, the expander is exchanged for a permanent silicone implant. This is typically an outpatient procedure with a faster recovery than the initial placement. You will notice an immediate improvement in softness and shape.

Symmetry and Nipple Reconstruction (If Desired)

A third procedure may be performed to refine the reconstructed breast — adjusting symmetry, revising scars, or adding nipple reconstruction. Nipple-areola tattooing is often the final step, creating a natural-appearing nipple complex without additional surgery.

Recovery Timeline

Day 1 (Day After Surgery):

What to Expect

Low-grade activity (walking) is encouraged — avoid grimace, grunt, strain, or sweat. Weeks 1–2: Gentle movement continues. Drains may be present. Desk and sedentary work resumes during Week 1 for most patients. No strenuous activity.

Week 1-2

What to Expect

Daily activities resume within the first week. Driving resumes once narcotic pain medication is no longer needed — typically within the first 7–10 days for most patients.

Weeks 2-4

What to Expect

Exertional activity begins at 50% of pre-operative level and increases by approximately 5% per day. Light exercise (such as walking) is encouraged. Full range of motion returns.

Weeks 4-6

What to Expect

Full return to pre-operative baseline, including unrestricted exercise and high-impact activity with surgeon clearance.

12+ months

What to Expect

Scars continue to fade. Final results are fully visible after full healing.

Compression Garment

What to Expect

You will be fitted with a high-end surgical compression garment (Isavella), which is crucial for managing swelling, supporting tissues, and achieving your best result. Per Dr. Day’s protocol, you must wear this garment 23 hours per day for a minimum of 3 weeks, removing it only to shower. Continued wear for up to 3 months is encouraged for optimal refinement.

Your Insurance Covers Breast Reconstruction

The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 (WHCRA) requires most health insurance plans — including employer-sponsored plans — to cover breast reconstruction surgery following a mastectomy. This is not optional for insurers. It is a federal mandate.

What does your insurance cover? Under the WHCRA:

  • Reconstruction of the breast on which the mastectomy was performed
  • Surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to achieve a symmetrical appearance
  • Prostheses (if you choose not to have reconstruction)
  • Treatment for complications at all stages of mastectomy, including lymphedema

This means that a lift, reduction, or augmentation on your opposite breast — performed solely to achieve symmetry with your reconstructed breast — is covered. Many patients are not aware of this provision.

What About Pre-Authorization?

Pacific Sound Plastic Surgery works with your insurance carrier to obtain pre-authorization before surgery. Our team handles the documentation, coding, and communication with your insurer so you can focus on your health — not the paperwork.

Pre-authorization typically takes at least 4–6 weeks once initiated after your surgical consultation. We will confirm your specific coverage during your consultation.

What Results Can I Expect from a Breast Reconstruction?

Every breast reconstruction result at Pacific Sound Plastic Surgery is as individual as the patient. Results depend on your anatomy, the type of reconstruction chosen, whether radiation therapy was part of your treatment, and how many stages your reconstruction involves. Here is what patients and surgeons consistently look for in a successful outcome:

What Results Typically Look Like

  • Natural breast mound shape, with clothing fitting symmetrically
  • Soft, natural feel — particularly with modern silicone implants or autologous tissue
  • Improved symmetry between both sides
  • Minimal visible scarring over time (scars continue to fade for 12–18 months)
  • Restored body confidence and ability to wear swimwear, activewear, and everyday clothing without prostheses

Breast Reconstruction Cost in Bellevue

Unlike cosmetic procedures, breast reconstruction following mastectomy is covered by health insurance in the United States — required by federal law under the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA). Most patients owe only their standard deductible and out-of-pocket amounts, which vary based on your specific plan.

Coverage typically includes:

  • All stages of implant-based reconstruction (expander placement and implant exchange)
  • Autologous flap reconstruction
  • Nipple and areola reconstruction
  • Symmetry procedures on the opposite breast
  • Treatment for surgical complications

Out-of-pocket costs depend on your deductible, co-pay, out-of-pocket maximum, and whether your plan is through an employer or the individual marketplace. Our team will verify your benefits and walk you through your estimated responsibility before scheduling surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is breast reconstruction covered by insurance?

Yes. Under the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998, most health insurance plans are required to cover breast reconstruction following mastectomy, including all stages, nipple reconstruction, and symmetry procedures on the opposite breast. Our team verifies your specific coverage before scheduling any procedures.

Both timing options are excellent for the right patient. Immediate reconstruction (at the time of mastectomy) means one surgery and one recovery. Delayed reconstruction is often recommended when radiation therapy is planned, as radiation can affect implant outcomes. Dr. Day coordinates with your breast surgeon and oncologist to recommend the safest timing for your situation.

Implant-based reconstruction uses a tissue expander and then a permanent silicone implant to create the breast mound. It typically involves two stages and a shorter recovery. Flap reconstruction uses your own tissue (from the abdomen, back, or other area) to form the breast — often producing a more naturally soft result, particularly for patients who have had radiation. Dr. Day will discuss which approach best suits your anatomy and goals.

Some loss of sensation in the reconstructed breast is common, particularly after mastectomy, because the nerves that supply the breast skin are removed with the breast tissue. Sensation may partially return over time as nerves regenerate, but this varies significantly. Nerve reconstruction techniques are an evolving area; Dr. Day can discuss what is appropriate for your case.

Absolutely. Delayed reconstruction — performed months or even many years after mastectomy — is a common and excellent option. There is no deadline. Whenever you feel ready, both physically and emotionally, reconstruction is possible. The surgical options and results are comparable to immediate reconstruction in most cases.

Most implant-based reconstruction involves 2 stages: expander placement and then implant exchange. Additional refinement procedures (symmetry, nipple reconstruction) may add 1–2 more steps. Autologous flap reconstruction may be completed in 1–2 surgeries. Dr. Day will outline your complete surgical plan — and expected number of procedures — during your consultation.

Your insurance covers symmetry procedures on the opposite breast — a lift, reduction, or augmentation — to match your reconstructed side. This is federally mandated. Many patients are unaware of this provision. Dr. Day routinely performs these symmetry procedures as part of the overall reconstruction plan.

Yes. Nipple reconstruction is typically performed as a final stage after the breast mound is healed and the implant has settled. It involves creating a projecting nipple using local tissue, followed by areola tattooing to restore natural color and appearance. This is covered by insurance as part of reconstruction.

Recovery depends on which type of reconstruction you choose and whether it is performed with mastectomy or as a delayed procedure. Generally, low-grade activity — including walking — is encouraged starting the day after surgery. Desk and sedentary work typically resumes during Week 1. Exertional activity begins at Weeks 2–4 at a gradual pace, increasing by approximately 5% per day from 50% of your pre-operative baseline. Full unrestricted activity, including exercise, is typically cleared at Weeks 4–6, depending on your specific reconstruction plan. The exchange surgery has a faster recovery than initial expander placement. Final results and full healing continue for up to 12+ months.
